What is Handcrafted Soap?
We handcraft all of our soap using the cold-process
method, which combines sheep, goat or cow milk with an
alkali and only the highest grade vegetable oils. We do
not use tallow, lard, or other animal fats in our soaps. Our
special combination of natural vegetable oils makes a
moisturizing but hard soap with an abundant, rich lather.
Crafting soap using milk as the base is more time
consuming than using water, but we have found the results
to be worth it!
Where
is the Soap Made?
We make all of our soap, one batch at a time, on our
rare-breed miniature sheep farm in Kennett Square,
Pennsylvania. Penn Oak Farm originally was the estate of
William Penn's daughter, Letitia, and we are happy to be
farming and creating usable products here, as they no
doubt did 300 years ago.
Why
Use Milk in our Soaps?
Milk-based soap is best for your skin. The higher the
fat content in the milk, the more moisturizing it will be.
Sheep milk has a higher fat content than cow or goat milk
and the milk and the cream do not separate. Also, the
natural alpha-hydroxy acids found in milk have a
rejuvenating and softening effect on the skin. While most
of our soap uses sheep milk as a base, some of our recipes
call for goat and cow milk, which also create a lovely
texture and lather.
What
Kinds of Soap Do We Have?
With over 50 varieties of soap, we have
"something for everyone." Ranging from our
lovely Just Plain Soap, which has no fragrance or
color added, to those scented and colored with essential
oils, fragrances, and tasteful and beautiful pigments, we
have found that our soaps fit into every home and
lifestyle. Some of our more unusual soaps include a
shampoo bar, a shaving bar (which contains facial clay for
a smooth shave), and anti-blemish bar for oily or
acne-prone skin, a bug-repellent soap (using a special
blend of essential oils), a castile soap, with only pure
olive oil for very sensitive skin, and a range of exotic
herbal soaps which contain healing properties. We
guarantee that we will find the perfect soap for you
(probably several).
